Danny's Corner Commentary

Danny on Joel on people's shitty websites:
If you're an Environmental Science major and you sucked at it, he wouldn't care. It's all good. But if you're a Web Design major you better have your shit together because Joel's on the loose. He'll tear your self-esteem apart and throw it in the dumpster.

And now back to the show.

Finals Are Equal to or Less Than Poop

I'm taking a quick break from finals to procrastinate (see last two posts). What do I have remaining? Well I have...
  1. A Patterns final exam (not fun)
  2. A poster for Graphic Design (a little fun, sometimes)(still have to print it though)
  3. Two papers for CyberPunks (okay)
  4. My Sound project (pretty fun, but a lot of work)
  5. Sensors and Switches robot/project (done and fun)
  6. Web Design final (very much fun, and done)
So there you have it. And now I should really get back to writing that paper.

PS - When I'm totally done with finals I will unveil my new sound blog I've been working on the better half of the semester! FUN! I'll also post anything remotely interesting.

BGEA

I bet you're wondering what the best first person shooter is game on the planet. Well I can tell you. It is Half Life 2. This, of course, is just my opinion. I first started with the first Half Life back in 1998, a whole seven years ago! I remember it well...

Half Life 2 takes place in the future of Half Life and is the most visually beautiful I have ever played. Some people say that the game sucks because there's no cut scenes or cinematic sequences, to that I say, "Poo on you!" Of course most of these people are hardcore Halo 2 fan-boys, and I can respect Halo 2's lovely cut scenes and such. But in real life you live your cut scenes and such is the case in Half Life 2. I got it a week ago and have played during every bit of free time I've had which apparently has equated out to 13 hours. So it was a short game in general, but decent by first person shooter standards.

One last note, for those of you who have beat the game and seen the ending sequence: Have you noticed that the only characters in the whole game who have green eyes are the G-man and Gordon Freeman? Yeah, think about that one.

Doo Dee Doo

One: Working with enormous files makes me cry.

Two: Awesome. The really small text in the yellow bar on the upper left hand corner says "Hear our message, say no to drugs."

Three: Art sale was really cool. Art is expensive! I was going to put in some prints this year, but ran into a bunch of problems, blah blah blah, I didn't put anything in. That made me feel like not-an-artist. Though I did buy some cute little play things for my younger cousins. They're fun!

Four: Finals time! Oh my god so much work t- *head explodes*

Best Blog Article Title of the day goes to...

GIZMODO!

They won with an article titled "HD DVD and Blu-Ray Already Outdated?"
Not everyone might find that funny but, as a tech-blog reader and tech enthusiast, I found it hilarious.

HD DVD and Blu-Ray had been the number one argument a few months back and lasted quite awhile. "Which technology is better? HD DVD or Blu-Ray?" Both were are similar to regular optical disc like CDs and DVDs but they can hold much more information. ANYWAYS, the article is about HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc), a technology 20 years in the making. Current HVDs can hold 3.9 terabytes of information. That's about 4000 gigabytes, ridiculous, I know. It also sports a very high data transfer rate so you wouldn't have to wait forever for your computer access the information on the disc. In summary, holograms are kick ass.

Perspective:
The entire US Library of Congress could be held (minus images) on 6 discs.
At HVD's transfer rates, you could burn an entire CD worth of music in 6 seconds.
Or you could burn a full DVD in 38 seconds.
One HVD can hold 820 of your favorite DVDs.

I think you get the picture.

Update:
When I said it can hold 3.9 terabytes I meant it has the capacity to hold that much information. Currently the company Optware is saying that they will have a 200GB disc out by the end of 2006, and yet other companies project a 1.6TB disc out by 2010. These discs would be for the average user. I think that the larger capacity discs would be similar to the 4.7GB DVD+/-R and the regular 8-someGB DVD for movies and games. The smaller being for the user end, the larger for sales and "non-recordability."

I saw this on slashdot yesterday. However, there it said they had a 300 gb capacity, with the capability for 3.9 tb capacity. Whichever is right, though, it's still damn impressive.

Barcodes

I'm mixing barcodes with images and seeing what I come up with. I will eventually be making a poster.

Barcode as rain.

Barcode as books.

Barcode as a selection.

Barcode as a city.

These are all, of course, still in the research and ideation stage.

A Computer Dive

Today I was a little bored and decided to dive into my computer. I was looking around at a bunch of files and taking a peek in ones that looked interesting. I came across a file called "fstab.hd" which I'm guessing used to be used for a "File Systems Table" but was slowly phased out because when I looked inside it read:

Haha, silly programers and their silly files.

A Post of a Post-It

Oh, I'm in Madison for Thanksgiving by the way.

This morning I found this note in the bathroom:

My sister is awesome! My sister, Evan, Tim, myself, and maybe some others will go see Harry Freak'in Potter! And it's gonna be cool.
